The most serious social problems which have become a grave threat to the whole fabric of punjabi society are problem of Dowery, Drug-Abuse, Smugglilng of Drugs,Fake Marriage or contract marriages for settling abroad, domestic violence, Honour Killing, casteism, chronic drinkers, fake travel agents etc. Though dowery once was a good tradition whose main motive was to provide the essential house hold items and a financial help to married daughter. But with the passage with the time its has taken an ugly shape and now dowery has become a business of greed. Non Resident Punjabis demand healthy sums to marry a Punjabi girl. Some time more that 20 to 30 lac. This greedy trend has brought shame to the pious Institution of marriage. Use of drug amongst the youth of the border belt and by those who reside in villages is another social evil. Politicians and Police officials nexus as given an impetus to the drug smuggling trade. Most of the Punjabi Young generation adopt illegal methods and means to settle abroad. Fake marriages and contract marriages are very common in Punjab. One may see many such advertisement in local newspapers where demand for contract marriages is put forth. Domestic violence too is most prevalent in sections of society, especially working women become the victims of such violence. Honour killings is another grave threat to the social structure of Punjab where inter-cast marriages are seen with hatred. We shall highlight all the above stated social problems in an effective visual manner.
